Best Everyday Watches Under $500

The best everyday watches under $500, from automatic classics to tough solar beaters, and how to choose one you’ll wear every day.

A good everyday watch does three things. It tells the time at a glance. It goes with jeans and a suit. And it survives being knocked against a doorframe. You don’t need to spend thousands for that. Under $500, there are watches with real history, solid build quality and movements that will run for decades with a bit of care.

What to look for

Movement. Automatic (mechanical, self-winding) watches are charming, need no battery and can last for generations with servicing. Quartz is more accurate, cheaper and nearly maintenance-free. Solar quartz, like Citizen’s Eco-Drive and Seiko’s solar models, charges from light and almost never needs a battery.

Size. For most wrists, 36 to 40 mm is the sweet spot for an everyday watch. Bigger can look clunky with a shirt cuff.

Water resistance. 100 meters (10 bar) means you can swim without worrying. 50 meters is fine for hand-washing and rain.

Crystal. Sapphire crystal resists scratches much better than mineral glass. It’s increasingly common at this price.

Strap. A steel bracelet goes with everything. Leather is dressier. Look for quick-release spring bars so you can swap straps easily.

Our favorites

These are well-established models that are widely available. Prices change, and new versions launch often, so check the current reference.

Seiko 5 Sports (automatic). Seiko’s affordable automatic line. Tough, versatile and available in dozens of colors and styles. A great first mechanical watch.

Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical. A hand-wound field watch with a military heritage and an 80-hour power reserve. Simple, legible and handsome on canvas or leather. Usually just under or around $500.

Tissot PRX (quartz or Powermatic 80). A 1970s-style integrated bracelet watch that looks far more expensive than it is. The quartz version is well under $500. The automatic is around the top of the budget.

Citizen Eco-Drive (various models). Solar-powered quartz watches with dress, field and dive styles. The Promaster dive watches are excellent beaters.

Orient Bambino. A classic dress watch with a domed crystal and automatic movement, at a very friendly price. Perfect with a suit.

Casio G-Shock (square 5600 series). Practically indestructible, accurate and cheap. Not elegant, but every man should probably own one.

Timex Marlin or Waterbury. American heritage designs at accessible prices. The Marlin hand-wound reissues are especially charming.

The Gent’s Verdict

If you want one watch for everything, buy a steel-bracelet watch around 38 mm with 100 m water resistance. The Tissot PRX and a Seiko 5 Sports are both easy recommendations.

Smartwatch or traditional?

A smartwatch is useful for fitness tracking, notifications and payments. A traditional watch is calmer, lasts longer and doesn’t need charging every night. Plenty of men wear a smartwatch for workouts and a traditional watch the rest of the time. Set it right: Time.gov, run by NIST, shows the official US time to the second.

How to wear it

  • Match metals loosely. A steel watch goes with a silver belt buckle, but it isn’t a strict rule.
  • Match leather. A brown strap with brown shoes and belt looks put together.
  • Keep it simple for formal events. A slim watch on a leather strap slides under a shirt cuff. See our guide on how to dress for a winter wedding.

You don’t need to spend thousands for a watch with history, solid build and a movement that will run for decades.

Care

  • Automatics: wind or wear them regularly, and service every 5 to 10 years.
  • Quartz: replace the battery promptly when it dies to avoid leaks.
  • Rinse with fresh water after the beach or pool.
  • Keep it away from strong magnets, like speakers and phone cases with magnetic clasps, which can affect mechanical movements.

A watch also makes a great gift. See our holiday gift guide for men and our list of gifts for dads who have everything. And if you like useful things that live in your pocket, our guide to EDC gear is next. Water resistance ratings are about pressure tests, not real depth, and seals wear out. The American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute can help you find a certified watchmaker for a pressure test.
